The subjects most aspirants must have studied while preparing for JEE are Fluid mechanics, Thermodynamics, Reaction Kinetics, Chemical Equilibrium, Physical Chemistry concepts like Electrochemistry, Adsorption Isotherms. You will study these topics again in depth.

The courses which you will be learning is being discussed briefly below:

  1.      Chemical Process Calculations: You will be learning here how to perform material and component mass balances to find the amount of material either entering or exiting the system so that you can use this information to calculate the heat generated or required, any external agents are required, etc. further. Also, you will be learning various concepts like recycling, bypass, etc. which is being used in a chemical plant.
  2.      Fluid Mechanics: You will be learning in depth about energy balance and continuity equation and will be applying the concepts for pipe systems. Concepts like Navier Stokes equation and Euler’s equation and Devices like orifice meter, venture meter will be taught.
  3.      Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics:  All the thermodynamic laws you have read earlier will be taught here in detail and you will be applying on different units of a chemical plant. You will be also taught about new concepts like availability and fugacity which is often used in chemical plant analysis.
  4.      Engineering Chemistry: This course provides an in-depth knowledge of the basic chemistry concepts you have learned till now and that you will be learning in your first year and their application.
  5.      Separation Processes: You will be learning a lot of important concepts in this course. It is being divided into two parts for two semesters. In this course, you will be learning about various operations like distillation, absorption, drying, crystallization, etc. which are called as unit operations. This course will teach you on what principles a chemical plant runs and how operating conditions influence the product.
  6.      Materials Science & Engineering: In this course, you will be learning about the various materials and what are various concepts which will be used to characterize or process materials such phase diagrams, nucleation and growth, X-ray diffraction, etc. Also, you will be learning properties of materials too.
  7.      Numerical Methods for Chemical Engineers: This course will give you a beginner’s insight to the modeling and simulation world of chemical engineering. You will be learning various methods how to model a process in different ways and compare which method will be the best to use for better simulation results, i.e., close to real results.
  8.      Heat Transfer: This course totally deals with the various modes of heat transfer, conduction, convection and radiation in depth for various geometries. Also, concepts of heat transfer through fluids and concepts like boiling and condensation will also be covered. This course will offer you an insight how to perform heat transfer operation efficiently.
  9.      Process Design Principles: If you are interested in designing of equipment and have a tendency towards accounting, then this course is the best for you. You will learn how to design a heat exchanger, pump, distillation column, etc. given all the operating conditions. In this course, simulation is also involved. This course is divided into two parts for two semesters. This course will set you up well for process engineering if you are interested in it.
  10.  Kinetics & Reactor Design: In this course, you will be learning how to design a reactor depending upon the product requirements and about various types of reactors used in the industries. The outcome of this course would you will be capable enough to suggest a type of reactor with various design parameters for a specific product.
  11.  Process Dynamics and Control: Along with Process Design Principles, this course gives you a proper introduction to process engineering. This course teaches you about how to control a system to give the desired output. Also, detailed introduction to various types of controllers and how to tune the controllers to give least error.

Apart from all these courses, you have to choose a minimum of 5 different elective courses of Chemical Engineering called as Discipline Elective such as Transport Phenomena, Corrosion Engineering, Advanced Chemical Reaction Engineering, Advanced Chemical Thermodynamics, Process Plant and Safety, Biochemical Engineering, etc. Also, you have to choose 5 different other elective courses called as Open electives which can be of other branches or chemical (after completing 5 Discipline Electives).
